If you’ve ever gone camping, hiking, trail running, climbing, or nearly any activity in the outdoors, chances are you’ve used a headlamp. The benefits of hands-free illumination are immeasurable and a budget-friendly headlamp that is both high quality and comfortable is the one piece of gear you should never be without. From camp to the trailhead, UCO Gear provides a versatile product line in headlamp technology.

With the days growing shorter, I needed a high quality and comfortable headlamp to power my adventures. The new UCO AIR headlamp is powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery and is both bright and ultra-lightweight. The Infinity Dial system makes for easy manual adjustment and allows for both red night vision mode and white LED light. You can ramp the adjustable brightness up to 150 lumens.

They really hit it out of the park as far as comfort goes. The precision fit strap is meant to eliminate pressure points, won’t constrict, and conforms to the shape of my head. With its padded webbing, it’s very possible I forget that I’m even wearing one. Over the years, I’ve owned too many headlamps that bounce around uncomfortably before slipping over my eyes–which is just embarrassing. The fully stitched neoprene is incredibly breathable and it won’t slip or stretch out like so many others do over time (my dignity is saved!)

My favorite feature of the AIR headlamp is the Micro-USB charging port. Because it uses an internal lithium-ion battery, you won’t need to buy batteries for this sucker. It uses a standard Micro-USB cable (not included), which is great for small electronics.

With batteries, this minimalist piece of gear clocks in at 1.6 ounces. It might be small, but it’s pretty mighty and will surprise you with its power. Beam projection is 154’ on high mode and battery life runs for 48 minutes on high (1.5 hours on a medium setting and 5 hours on low).

I would not recommend the AIR headlamp for serious backcountry outings, but it is perfect for proximity lighting, such as setting up camp and cooking dinner, trail running, day hiking, or reading in the tent. The AIR headlamp delivers a lot of performance for the dollar, retailing for $34.99, and is the perfect ultralight companion.
